Top 4 Ways to Enjoy the Water in Downtown Norfolk, VA

In downtown Norfolk, we’re fortunate enough to be located on the water, the Elizabeth River to be exact. The views are unrivaled and you’ll gain a completely different perspective of our stellar city from the waterfront. Here are the top four ways to get out on the water from Downtown Norfolk!

City Cruises by Hornblower

City Cruises by Hornblower (pictured above) has the most diverse themed cruises of all the ships including drag brunch, moonlight, taco Tuesday cruises and so much more. Each cruise carries its own atmosphere, but all-in-all the energy aboard this vessel is unmatched. Watch this yacht come to life with stunning views, delicious food, cocktails and music. No matter which cruise you are on when hopping aboard, you can’t help but dance along to the DJ and the ride will quickly become a party on the water.

Sail Nauticus

For a more intimate and personal way to get on the water, cruise the sea with Sail Nauticus. A maximum of four people (and the instructor) can be onboard the sailboat, making it an extra private experience. Looking for a romantic evening? We suggest packing your own charcuterie board, snuggling up to your sweetheart and watching the skyline of Norfolk transform into cotton candy colors as the sun sets. This also makes for the perfect outing, no matter what time of year, for groups of friends or small families. You’re welcome to bring snacks, music and soft drinks on board while you take in the salty air!

Victory Rover

You will have a wealth of knowledge when taking this cruise so hop on board and learn about the Port of Virginia, shipbuilding, history of Norfolk and the most anticipated sight, the world’s largest Naval Base, Naval Station Norfolk. We know not everyone has access to the base itself so this is the next best way to take in the sights of the mighty destroyers, awe over aircraft carriers, sneak a peek at the submarines and learn about all the other crucial vessels that may be in dock. Pictures are more than encouraged!

American Rover

A three-masted topsail schooner resides in downtown Norfolk, making it an icon of our waterfront. Its distinct red sails catch the breeze and will take you down the Elizabeth River so effortlessly you sometimes forget you’re moving. With tropical summery music as the soundtrack and the Norfolk skyline as your backdrop, the two hours spent out on the water will have you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated.

The American Rover offers three different types of cruises, a hands-on sailing adventure, harbor cruise and a sunset cruise. On the sailing adventure cruise, kids will have an opportunity to lend a hand in setting the sails and even taking a turn at the helm! While the sunset cruise is for those looking for a group activity or a romantic night out. All of the cruises have narration as you pass landmarks, neighborhoods and will even touch upon the history of Norfolk.
